Alcohol is a liquid produced by fermentation of sugars. It is a psychoactive substance (it has the ability to stimulate the brain). It is commonly used in alcoholic beverages for recreational purpose, used as a preservative to prevent decay and as a drug it can reduce the functional activity of the brain "calm your nerves". It can also be used as an antiseptic or disinfectant.

Hence, as:

Ethanol - in Beverages

Methanol - in Chemicals and antiseptics

People take alcohol for various reasons: let's see some of them shall we?

*To get drunk (let's be frank)

*Be more social (oshey! life of the party)

*Manage stress (there are better ways to do this come on!)

*For fun (of course "Ballerji"😅)

*As a habit (I must admit)

Effects on the body.

Now let's get serious. When you drink alcohol, it does not get digested. It passes into your blood and travels to every part of your body.

In the brain it reduces the control you have over your body and can make you feel more happy and expressive.

In the liver it is broken down into acetaldehyde.

Acetaldehyde is toxic and has the ability to damage your DNA and liver which can lead to cancer. The longer it stays in your body, the more dangerous it is.

Now we know that alcohol can be bad for us but it's also sweet, so how much exactly is too much???🤷🏾‍♂️

We can use this to tell:

For men the acceptable limit is

3-4 units a day

And not more than 14 units a week

For women the acceptable limit is 2-3 units a day

And not more than 7 units a week

How can I calculate my units you say?

Unit of alcohol= (volume of alcohol in mL x alcohol concentration)/1000

So a typical beer bottle of 600ml and 5% alcohol concentration is already 3 units!

Taking alcohol in moderate amount

well within the limits might sound good but it has been shown that moderate alcohol drinkers have a 15% increase in developing diseases such as breast cancer, stroke, hypertension, cancer of the oesophagus, liver disease and death.

Let's always apply caution in the things we do. You might say that alcohol has some benefits such as protecting your heart however I believe there are more healthy ways to achieve that such as regular exercise and eating healthy meals.
