Stepping on a nail can be a painful experience. Depending on the severity of the injury, the nail can puncture a hole deep in the sole of your foot and as a result can be very difficult to clean and poses a risk of some very serious infections.
First Aid immediately after stepping on a nail.
1) Wash your hand properly with soap and water. This is to prevent any germs from the hands getting into your body from the injury site.
2) If the puncture caused by the nail is bleeding, stop the bleeding by applying gentle pressure with a clean cloth.
3) Clean the wound by rinsing with clean water for 5-10 minutes. If there is dirt (sand, rust, wood) in the wound afterwards remove it with the help of a disinfected tweezer or with a disinfected pin or needle.
To disinfect the pin clean it with alcohol or methylated spirit.
4) Apply antibiotic cream or antiseptic ointment to the site. Such as Neomycin plus bactracin, Banedif.
5) Dress the wound with a clean bandage. In the absence of one, Make use of tissue to properly cover the wound.
DO NOT LEAVE THE WOUND EXPOSED!
6) Seek Medical help within 24-48 hours after stepping on the nail.
If it is a minor cut, you may not require medical attention.
Even after cleaning the wound it is necessary for you to seek medical help from your Pharmacist, Doctor or Nurse as serious infections such as tetanus can develop if you do not seek early medical attention.
TETANUS HAS NO CURE.
Other serious complications could also arise so please do seek medical help.
